Women Directors React to the Bigelow Win

Women & Hollywood: "It’s still sinking in — the big Bigelow win — and I wanted to hear what other folks thought, so I reached out to women directors around the world at all levels of their careers and asked them what they thought and what it means for them. Thanks to everyone who responded. If other still want to respond, I’d be happy to add. I would love to get the reactions of the women who have been nominated previously and I am working on that — if you know Lina Wertmuller, or Sofia Copolla and can contact them (I already have a feeler out to Jane Campion), please email me — I’ll let you know if I hear from them."

The reactions to Kathryn Bigelow's win are myriad, but I've been struggling with understanding the hype. Not being a woman and not being a film professional, it is difficult for me to see the gender "glass ceiling" that appears to be present in the industry, and if there really is a prejudice against giving women directorships over large-budget films, then that is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with. The separate issue that I am concerned with, however, is if a desire for diversity and essentially affirmative action drove Kathryn's selection over her filmmaking. I got this impression from pre-Oscar reviews and even from the intro to the award category ("Will the best director be the first woman, or African-American, or will a surprise be in store?") The Awards should really be going to the best director nominated, and if there were politics involved(even in the hopes of encouraging diversity), that besmirches the validity of the Award for me.
