The Indie Theatre Ghetto

a poor player: "I thought the most interesting aspect of this graphic was the fact that, while 77% of OOB theatre practitioners are white, only 45% of the population of New York City is white. And just as striking are the figures below it: while 27% of NYC’s population is Black/African American, only 5% of OOB theatre people are Black/African American. Although not in this graphic, the numbers for the Hispanic community mirror those of the African American numbers."

This article brings up a lot of interesting points about the racial diversity in people who work in the theater industry, I think the author goes a little too far when he says that what is being created is a "theatrical ghetto" to me, that term, the way he explains it, has a connotation that there is a specific design and intention in which the white majority wants to carry through which is to eliminate theater that tells the story of the non-white minorities and to only promote and do theater that appeals to the higher ups who are predominantly white. I think that a lot of the statistics cannot exactly be drawn to show that and I think it's more that it has taken a while for the black, asian, etc communities to grow and establish a kind of entertainment culture and industry of their own in the U.S.. On the other hand, theater is increasingly becoming controversial, exploring new themes and new works that haven't been before, and is offering a lot of opportunity to tell stories of the unheard, and I think we will continue to experience somewhat of a Renaissance with the modern theater.
