Schwartz is a natural for Rodgers Award
Post Gazette: "When weeks-long productions of 'Wicked' sell out in the Cultural District, Pittsburghers who delight in the music and songs are acknowledging the work of composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who honed his craft at Carnegie Mellon University and who is the 2009 recipient of the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theater."

I'm glad that Schwartz is recognized for his work.... he is truly amazing. To me, he seems very modest. The fact that he wrote Pippin as an undergrad in Scotch and Soda is remarkable. But he seems to remember his past. It makes me happy that he wants to work in time for a CMU master class!
After having the chance to speak briefly with Steven when he came to the ASCAP Bubble Boy show during first semester, I was too greatly impressed with his modesty and high-value in doing education.
I hadn't realized before what other things he's done besides PIPPEN and WICKED; but, I was happy to see someone equally eager to work with students from CMU as the students from CMU were to meet him. The master class would be great and I'd certainly attend.
Congrats!
I had no idea the Schwartz went to CMU. Also, I didn't know the other shows that he has done. It's really great that he is getting well-deserved recognition for all the amazing work he has done over the years. I agree with those who commented before me, I think a master class would be a GREAT idea, and I'd love to attend.
How exciting to have a CMU grad striking out and creating new works, especially when the weight of his former success could carry him onward financially for many years. While I respect his modesty and older pieces, I also look forward to his future projects and will of course be happy to brag that he attended CMU.
