High school play canceled over possible objections to gay content

Los Angeles Times: "Now, amid growing backlash and consternation from some students and members of the gay community, the actors at Corona del Mar High are grudgingly preparing for a very different show: 'You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.' The drama teacher said it's a safer choice and one sure to pass muster with his boss."

I feel like if a principal really wanted to cancel a show because of content, and she truly believed it was inappropriate, she wouldn't deny it. The situation was terribly handled, though--how come the principal waited so long to cancel the show (after it had been cast)? Also, the drama teacher said he wanted to teach tolerance, yet he was planning to do a production that edited out same-sex displays of affection. WHAT?

Somehow not surprised this happened at all. I've always lived in a district where the principal reviewed material before it could be publicly displayed. Its incredibly unfortunate that we still live in such an insensitive political climate. Especially in California, you would expect districts to be more socially conscious and realize the merit for high school students to be able to work on such productions and view such productions. Some things aren't going to change any time soon.
