‘Rent,’ the High School Musical? Not in Some Communities

NYTimes.com: "Theater directors and students at more than 40 high schools across the country have selected a new show for their big springtime musical this year: “Rent: School Edition,” a modified version of the hit Broadway musical that, while toned down a bit, remains provocative by traditional drama club standards."

I have very strong views on this issue. I think it is incredibly insensitive for schools to prohibit productions of "Rent: School Edition" Additionally, I would go so far as to say it is a breach of 1st Amendment rights...that's another story for another day. However, I feel that many of these principals have been looking over the purpose of this show. It's not there to introduce kids to drugs, or make them want to get high. No where do any of these principals mention the benefits of this show, or the heart-wrenching stories of the characters. I can understand the idea that some of the material is sensitive for the stage, particularly with language. And if that is your issue, fine, prohibit the production. But if you have a problem with homosexuals on stage, I think you should find another profession, I would hate to think that someone so close minded is responsible for educating our youth.
Rant over...for now
