Review: 'Movin' Out' sings and dances into town

Post Gazette: "They're doing their own version of 'Dancing With the Stars' over at the Benedum Center this weekend, where 'Movin' Out' has moved in through Sunday and is giving nightly lessons in what it takes to be the hardest working dancers in show biz."

I saw this production this afternoon and was astounded by the talent of the company; their dancing was fantastic and the vocals and music were spectacular.

On another note, I found the tour's production value to be one of, if not the, lousiest I've ever seen. The show's lighting design was executed in what seemed to be a very sloppy way, and simple cues (flying main scrim at end of show) were early. I'm curious as to why this show, which has had such great acclaim on Broadway and on tour in the past, was executed so poorly.

It was still worth seeing, if not just to see what NOT to do in a production's design. Good dance and music, though!

when I saw the show in NY a few years ago, it was fantastic, not only the dancers, but the design. Like the article says, its some of the hardest dancing out there, and often they don't get the credit they dserve because Twyla Tharp and Billy Joel are such headliners, and people only think of them. I am surprised that the lighting design didn't come through, cause when i saw it, it was great. I am sorry that you lost some of the meaning, Andrew, cause so much came through in the lighting etc.

I attended this performance with Andrew the other day and agree with his assessment of the production quality. I had seen the show once before on tour when it came to Boston a few years back and the lighting was very different then, than it was when we saw it. I am not sure if it is changes made or just simply the tour is falling out of line. But what Holder is typically able to do with light, and what I have witnessed him do, did not come through onstage at the Benedum the other night. Again, I am not trying to knock Holder's design, rather I think as Andrew mentioned, the execution could use some work.

On the positive sides, It is a fantastic show. The dance and choreography are amazing and the music is just incredible. What that band is able to produce night after night is unprecedented for a touring production.
