Vampire Weekend Obama Show Canceled
Pitchfork: "Well, that just sucks. The Carnegie Mellon University chapter of Students for Barack Obama have been forced to cancel an event in Pittsburgh this Saturday (October 4), the very same event Obama supporters Vampire Weekend were scheduled to play. With no young politicos to serenade with their arsenal of toe-tappers, the band will steer clear of Pittsburgh over the weekend, making their next show an appearance at the Iceland Airwaves Festival in Reykjavik later this month."

I would really like a reason why the show was canceled so last minute. It almost feels like this was a trick to get more people to register, with no intention of the show actually happening. I'd like to have more faith in people, but politics is full of lies, is it such a stretch.
Agreed. It's really annoying that they canceled. I was planning to go. I really like that there are bands that don't just care about themselves and would like to use their celebrity to make a difference. Unlike all those videos where actors spend all of what 10 seconds recording a few words making it look like they care. Also why are no bands supporting McCain? Tragic. The one thing that drives me crazy though about voting are all of the people who come up to me or stop me and ask me if I'm registered. Everybody knows that not enough people from our age range vote but asking people and bothering them isn't going to change whether they register or not.
Its a wierd turn of events. I wish I could find out why the event was cancelled. It is important that figures in the public eye get involved in politics. It involves more people and changes opions.
Theres a lot I can say about the way artist get invloved politicvally. It really goers back to the government getting involved with art and I think that is completely wrong. I like vampire weekend and what if I was voting for McCain? Does that make me a horrible person if I still go to the concert just for the enjoyment of being with a band I like? Or do I now have a judgement on the band because they are against who I am voting for? I think it is a horribly touchy subject and I wish they would think more about appearing in such festivities as these...
Just a thought.

Wow, that really sucks. I would really like to know the real reason why they canceled. It makes the band and the school look really bad. You can't promise a concert to get people to vote and then not have it.... Not good politics.
I'm afraid this will hurt Obama's campaign a little bit. Its kind of like they lied to us by promising us a show that was cancelled. Also, why was the show cancelled so soon to the date? Why wasn't it cancelled sooner rather than later? It makes me worry about what's going with politics.
I have a feeling that this show may have had some pressure from the Cultural Trust to cancel the show with the big fireworks event and related stuff going on that evening. I'm sure that there was never any intention for the show to get canceled, and I cannot see this hurting his campaign. The people who were going to go to this concert were mostly college students, and this is a demographic that Obama has already won quite solidly.
This is just hearsay, but I was informed that Vampire Weekend canceled due to a lack of organized security at the event. I'd really have appreciated it if the Democrats were a little more on top of things, but isn't that the truth. >.>
Additionally, artists are entitled to their opinions just like every body else. Paige, it doesn't make you a horrible person any more than it makes Vampire Weekend produce horrible music for supporting Obama. The two are completely unrelated. And bothering people to register is the is pretty much the only way to get the message out there. This is important - as much as I dislike being constantly bombarded by political campaigns, people need to get out there.
I was really upset this show got canceled. I love Vampire Weekend and it was a really good idea to get people out and registered to vote.
I was quite upset when I learned that the vampire weekend concert was cancelled. The first time I saw vampire weekend was when I was watching one of my most beloved shows on television, Saturday night live. Also disappointing is the let down on the part of Barak Obama's camp for failing to provide this entertainment, although I doubt it will negatively effect the voter turnout.
