Somebody forgot about Baby's songs in "Dirty Dancing"

chicagotribune.com: "Baby, you fans of the movie 'Dirty Dancing' might recall, has a rich summer of '63 in the Catskills. She learns to dance. She has a fight with her daddy. She loses her virginity.
In fact, she learns to do just about everything except sing. Which would be fine, except she's now starring in a Broadway show."

I really agree with the author of this article. Why do a just live reenactment of the movie? There is no exciting and worthwhile reason for the audience to be there instead on in their living rooms at home watching it.

It would have been another thing entirely if they had the two main characters actually sing. That is the main reason why this fails at a musical. How can you have a musical without the two main stars singing in it? Why do we care what they other characters are singing about? You can even be as bold as to add a few news scenes. Imagine that.

The article does raise an interesting question of what is a musical and what is a play with music. If your leads don't sing in a musical, than is it a more of a chorus production?
