Images of a Haunting Stage

Chicago Stage Review: "Chicago is filled with storied of haunted places and haunted theaters. From tiny black boxes to lavish, large scale venues, stories are told of strange occurrences. The old Iroquois, Biograph and Music Box Theaters all have chilling stories, both real life and supernatural. I am sure that there are folks out there with spooky tales to tell about Chicago’s decaying Uptown Theater. But more so than hauntED, this enchanting old movie palace proves to be hauntING to so many who have fought tirelessly to preserve it."

There is nothing like a beautiful old theatre. I remember when I was younger and went to the theatre, seeing the carvings and paintings on the ceilings and thinking they were just like the ones in churches and synogagues, just to a different Deity and I was sold.

This is such a unique space, and it is a shame that it's closed to the public. I definitely think they could do an awesome museum, or maybe even keep it in its current state and do some site-specific pieces. The preservation of urban spaces like this is so difficult with cities constantly building on top of themselves in order to expand. I hope that even if this space is not preserved for performances that it is at least open to the public for some occasions.

It's really cool to see the old-school dimmer wall, it's something I've learned about but never seen. Something like this could be very valuable for teaching theatre history. Taking a tour, or even seeing these pictures, demonstrates what it was like far better than words ever could.
