Center Theatre Group offers 100,000 $20 tickets for 2008-09

Los Angeles Times: "In a preemptive strike to keep audiences from trading an evening of theater for TV and a frozen pizza during troubled economic times, Center Theatre Group is announcing a new 'Entertainment Stimulus Package' that will make available 100,000 tickets at $20, available for all performances at all three of its theaters --the Ahmanson, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas -- for the entire 2008-09 season."

I'm surprised that The Center Theater is able to afford this kind of bargain. You would think in times of economic poverty that even the theater would be poor. However, I could see Center Theater benefiting greatly from this bargain over an extended period of time, not just one season.

If these low price tickets lead to more long term subscribers, Center Theater could really profit from this Entertainment Stimulus Packet. However, like Anthony said, not so sure this is an affordable long term solution. Hopefully people will use this as an opportunity to see more theater, just in case it doesn't last.

This seems more like a ploy to get people back in the theater with one show bombing after another. Now, I must admit CTG does really good at outreach programs and education programs for schools but I would curious if this is a two fold PR & Subscription drive.

Besides the cynicism, I can see this as a way to help the local theater community in general to keep performing arts awareness up with the recession.

this is a big move on their part to keep their audiences interested. We won’t be able to tell for awhile whether it is going to be successful. I don’t think cutting ticket prices and offering incentives is the only answer. I think that the material of the productions has to be more engaging and attractive then what it has been. Lower prices will not pull people out of their homes if the material of the production is the same. This is the tip of the iceberg though, with the changes that are going to occur in the industry.
