It Finally Happened…
SM on Tour/In the Office: "I’ve been lucky over the past 6 years. I landed a good internship which helped me make connections which got me a gig at CalShakes. From there, through another connection, I got the job at the ballet. And ever since May of 2003, I’ve been rotating between summers at CalShakes and the rest of the season at the ballet. After finishing my 6th season with CalShakes, they’ve decided to not call me back. Ouch."

It’s hard to always be looking for a job. Even when you are employed in this business you have to be thinking about what you will be doing next. That's how the theatre business is set up so it requires a lot of endurance and perseverance to always be on the search.
The only way around that is to stay with the same theatre group for a long time like this stage manager did. But once you get into that comfortable position of knowing what is next. But once that is over then it is probably a lot harder to start looking for jobs again.
It's sad to read this but getting into the business we're in this sort of thing just comes with the territory. We all wish it didn't, but if it weren't that way would we still do it? I don't know. I have been thinking about this quite a lot lately mostly wondering if I want to be going from job to job when I graduate or if I want to keep the steady job. It's a big decision to make when exciting touring opportunities come up but, like she mentions, companies need security that you're going to commit, too.
