"It is a difficult time ... Regular theatre-goers will be smarter about how they spend their money, while producers will be thinking of taking on the right projects."
This is a weird situation to see things closing early in the west end. There obviously must be some reasons for this occurrence and it all seems a little timely on the ends of the producers. Plays on the west end are brilliant and jhaving shows which are booked to a certain time, having them close will upset many people. I think that this is something we as theatre students should keep and eye on and watch carefully. We dont know what could possibly come from this.
It is interesting to see that shows are closing down across the pond as well. One thing that I think has been overlooked in alot of these articles is the shows that are opening up. I know it is tough to look on the bright side in situations such as these, but new shows are opening, like Billy Elliot in its move from the West End to Broadway, as well as the shows which are doing just fine. This is simply something in the theatrical community we need to push through and look for the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm surprised to see so many closings. Yes, the economy is bad, but I'm still hopeful in the idea that people need an escape. As these shows close, I'll be surprised to see what new shows can do to spread light on the current economic crisis
It is unfortunate to hear about shows closing and we can probably expect even worse times ahead. However theatre will always have adaptability and versatility on its side as well as loyal followers who will continue to support it. Theatre has always proven capable of changing with times in addition to helping people get through hard times, hopefully this time will be no different.
It's very sad to see shows close soon but that also opens up venues and people to create new theater. In this economy shows almost need to end when they stop making money so the artists can move on - making money through different shows. At least new theatre gets a first time audience who are curious about the new work, even if they aren't the best. It is terrible to think about only making money, but everyone is in a crunch now. The only thing that brings me comfort is the entire world is suffering, not just my family... we can all make it through together.
