Ethan Hawke - Things We Want

New York Times: "“THINGS WE WANT,” the new play by Jonathan Marc Sherman, has four characters. Three of them are alcoholics. The old maxim goes, “Write what you know,” and Mr. Sherman has done just that. “Things We Want,” a New Group production that will begin previews Oct. 22 at the Acorn Theater, is the first new work from this former boy wonder in nearly a decade."

I find it really daring of Sherman, or any playwright, to produce something so intimate and personal, and a work that everyone knows is based on his own experience. It's interesting to me that while his friends didn't all react well to his problem, judged him, and left him, his audience is more accepting. Even the worst experiences, or something that would be terrible to have as a close, personal encounter, makes really great art that's embraced rather than rejected. Perhaps it's because we can distance ourselves from what's on stage or we don't know the man personally? Still, it's very daring to put your life on the stage, especially when everybody knows it.
