Broadway Stagehands Union Sets Date for Strike Authorization Vote

Playbill News: "Local One, the Broadway stagehands union, announced Oct. 12 that a meeting has been called for Oct. 21 in order to ask its members to 'give authorization to the union leadership to take any job action necessary in light of the possibility of the producers implementing new work rules.'"

Things seem to be heating up nicely with this story. Lets just hope that by the 21st, someone will come up with a plan to keep the peace. No one want's a strike, it's bad for business now and in the future. The timing could be very bad for broadway with the holiday season coming up, it could put some producers in slumps that last a lifetime. It would be strange to walk down broadway and not see a single person dressed up to see a show.

The union is creaking its knuckles at the producers. They met with all the other unions, and are calling for a vote. I don’t see why the rest of local one would want to strike. There are 300 Broadway stage hands and 2,500 other I.A.T.S.E members. I guess the 300 “brothers” are going to really be depending on there “brotherhood” ploys to get the vote to strike.

So Ryan brings up a good point that I was thinking about. What are all the other members going to do when they have to strike, but they aren't directly involved in the current situation. I can see how they might look ahead and try to protect their future interests, but the outcome isn't so clear and cut for them as it is for the Broadway guys. I do think its powerful though that multiple unions might be involved and so could push even more weight on the producers.
