MythBusters's Jamie Hyneman explains his toolkit that nobody else can touch

Boing Boing: In this video a fan rescued from the old MythBusters site on Discovery, Jamie goes through his essential toolkit, the tools he doesn’t let anyone else touch... He recommends several somewhat unusual tools, several that bear pointing out, a unibit, a telescoping inspection mirror, and Knipex cutters.

I grew up with the Mythbusters show and can not express how glad I am to see them featured so often on this page in recent weeks. This video made me feel like I was rewatching one of our first Scenic Fabrication classes in which David Boevers gave us a tour of everything in his personal tool bag. Just as Jamie says in this video, people take your stuff and lose it, so having your own tools is very important. In Jamie’s toolbox everything has a place and he knows how to get things without even looking. The difference here between Boevers’ backpack and Jamie’s box is that Jamie has a personal shop, and does not need to travel with his bag, meaning he has many more tools, and a gigantic tool box that definitely could not be lugged around easily in a freelance situation. Jamie also has much more interesting tools than we would normally see in our shop.

This is a really cool video to see. I remember watching MythBusters all the time back when it was Jamie and Adam (I’m not even sure if the show is still on, but I bet it is). It honestly is so crazy how something MythBusters related is on this blog page almost every week because I can’t remember the last time I have seen something about MythBusters before having to do comments on this page. I love their content. It is always so fascinating to see what people have inside of their toolboxes and what they deem as the most important tools for their everyday use. Obviously this is something very important for Jamie because his job relied almost entirely on tools all day. It is very interesting to see some of the unusual tools he keeps in there like the inspection mirror and others. It is also really nice to get some ideas from professionals like him because you never know what you are going to need for a certain project and it is always best to be prepared for anything.

I have to agree with Kaylie when she said this reminded her of David's class earlier this semester (although it seems like eons ago now). There is actually a significant amount of crossover between what David had and Jamie shows in this video, which shouldn't be surprising since Jamie worked in special effects and props for so long. Some of these tools do make a bit more sense when working on a smaller scale that we often don't see in the scene shop, but that doesn't mean they can't be useful! From this video, I've added the fishing hook remover and surgeons tweezers to my wishlist of tools, both of which I know I could have used at one point or another. Not only does it give me a broader idea of cool tools to use, but also broadens the scope of what those tools can be use for (think about David's hammer turned 1" spade bit). I just wrote this for another article but I'll say it again, hearing about other people's toolbags will not cease to pique my interest.

I’ve been a fan of Mythbusters since my childhood. Instead of growing up and watching cartoons, I often opted for the Science Channel and the Discovery Channel. I used to get gifts of DVD sets of Mythbusters and Dirty Jobs and I would watch them multiple times. I still remember in ninth grade when it was announced that Mythbusters was ending. It’s been nice being able to continue watching Adam Savage through his Tested channel, but I haven’t seen or heard much about what Jamie Hyneman is up to these days. Although this video is old, it was nice to get a little insight into Jamie Hyneman as himself and not on Mythbusters. It was also interesting to see what he kept in his basic kit. He is certainly very well stocked and is prepared for basically anything that comes at him. I always enjoy seeing what different experienced professionals keep in their personal basics kit, because sometimes I see something that I would like in my own.

Mythbusters brings back so much nostalgia from when I was a lot younger! It was one of the things I watched constantly because I loved watching how they thought through the things they were doing and how constructed them. Not to mention the amount of explosives being used every other episode. This video is kinda fun since it’s always interesting seeing what people carry around with them day to day and what tools they view are important to have on them. Like others have said, it really does remind me of Boevers’ tool bag lesson. There are definitely a good number of things that he carries that I wouldn’t have thought would be necessary to have on hand. The toolkit Jamie has seems pretty large though so I’m not quite sure how much of what he’s showing he would actually bring if he moved about constantly and could only really carry a backpack full.
