Copyright in the 21st Century

SoundGirls.org: As we know, March 2020 has been a strange time for most of the world due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Subsequently, the music industry at large has been extremely quiet, but before the outbreak and lockdown rules became widespread there were several interesting events and technological advances relating to music copyright law.

I found this article really interesting because I don’t really know a lot (or anything) about music copyright but I have heard about some of these court cases, although I didn’t know much about them. I am a little confused by this software that there people made that just comes up with melodies. Are they doing anything with these melodies? Or are they just creating these melodies so that they can copyright them and no one else can use them? Because that doesn’t seem like a great thing to do. I do think it is interesting in music because ultimately there is not an unlimited number of notes, so it is possible that someone could create the same melody that someone else already made without even knowing it. Especially if there aren’t very many notes in the melody. I would be interested in looking up more about how these court cases play out and what the copyright laws for music actually are.
