Guthrie Theater furloughs most of its full-time employees for a week

Star Tribune: The Guthrie Theater is furloughing most of its full-time staff for a week during January, a theater official confirmed Tuesday. The Guthrie has about 120 full-time employees, a figure that swells when productions are up on its three stages.
The theater’s employees have had forced time off “a couple of times” since the Guthrie moved into its new riverfront complex in June 2006, said Trish Santini, director of external relations.

It is such a shame that many of the Guthrie's full-time employees will be forced to take time off. While it certainly isn't the best situation to make employees take time off, it seems as if this decision was anticipated and deliberate for the Guthrie. It is interesting to see how they will be using their time during their dark month. I wonder if the renovations to the facility are the best for the company, since they are already in a bad place financially. However, perhaps these renovations will result in more profit for them in the long run. Hopefully the Guthrie is also spending this month really analyzing their budget to determine where they went wrong in the past year. This situation really shows how important it is for a theater company to stay on top of their budget and stay vigilant in standing by it throughout the year. Hopefully this month off will result in a strong comeback for the Guthrie in 2014.
