Minnesota Theater Alliance Presents National Conference on Sustainable Practices in Theatre

Stage Directions: Concerned about how “Green” (or not) your theatre is? The Minnesota Theater Alliance and the Twin Cities Sustainable Theatres Group are presenting "Sustainability in Theater Conference,” a national conference on sustainable practices for the performing arts. The conference will be hosted by Brave New Workshop. In a nice touch, you can attend without traveling there and incurring all sorts of carbon debt. There will be a live Webcast through QwikCast and online collaboration through Google+ Hangouts On Air.

The more green we are the better! There is definitely no counter argument that I can see for that in theatre, besides money. Theatre is one of the most wasteful industries that I know of, and that Im involved in. We use our resources as much as we can, and we try to maximize them when we use them. This conference will hopefully give individuals new ideas, and bring out new ways for us to be more green, and maybe recycle goods instead of striking them to a trash can. It would be interesting to see how this department affects the theatre industry as a whole, or individual fields within theatre.

I'm always interested in this kind of thinking but I'm suspect sometimes. Regional theatre is, in many ways, already very green (in that, many reuse scenery and supplies for as long as they reasonably can before they're FORCED to replace them). Reusability can stagnate creativity. So where do you draw the line? I'll look for other seminars titled, "Don't glue that, we'll use it for the next show" and "We don't let our LDs use blue gel because it bleeds so easily."
