New York Innovative Theatre Awards Announces 2007 Recipients

Stage-directions: "The 2007 New York Innovative Theatre Awards were held Sept. 24, 2007, at the Fashion Institute of Technology Morris-Haft Auditorium to recognize Off-Off-Broadway talent in the New York community. The IT Awards is a nonprofit organization created to recognize Off-Off-Broadway artists and promote awareness of the entire New York theatre experience."

I think the mission of theses awards is really nice. The fact that they are improving awareness about the non-mainstream and relatively unknown theater work going on in New York is great to me. So often we over look the fact that theaters with smaller budgets and not as much “wow” factor then become all about the actual work; and that in and of its self deserves to be acknowledged.

i really appriciate what these awards are doing for theatre. i feel like often times "Broadway" shows are just big money pots, they don't make a profound statement or go out on any limbs, and this usually makes for boring theatre. these smaller organizations though i feel are constantly taking risks and making very interesting theatre, they are alomst in a "nothing-to-lose" mentality; which i think is great.
