Speaking in Draft: Marcia Johnson

Intermission Magazine: Sometimes, in the thick of the hustle, I forget that I’m not the first person to stare with dread at a blank page, or to lament how siloed Canadian theatre can be, all of us in our own creative corners. Whenever I get like this, a reliable antidote is to have a conversation with someone who’s been in the game far longer than I have — someone like playwright, librettist, and actor Marcia Johnson, who I interviewed for this latest installment of Speaking in Draft.

I am incredibly interested in Marcia Johnson’s point of view on writing. The idea that writing is going back and fixing something that happened in the past is a very different perspective than any other writer I have read about. It's also interesting to learn about how different playwrights have differing opinions on how involved they should be with the production of their work. How Marcia Johnson acts in her own work is a new concept for me I feel like I often hear of writers directing their own work but I don’t often experience writers who also act in their own theatrical shows. Marcia Johnson’s way of opening others up to new points of view on historically significant events like with Serving Elizabeth shows her growth from writing about her own experiences to writing about those of others and seeing how changing an action changes the outcome of an event
