Makita XDT20 18V LXT Quick-Shift Impact Driver Review

Pro Tool Reviews: Makita is constantly in the mix when we’re testing the best impact drivers, and their design team tends to think of innovations other brands don’t. With the launch of the 20th iteration for the 18V LXT line, I’ve set my sights on the Makita XDT20 impact driver. Is this the upgrade you’ve been waiting for? Let’s find out!

Makita is not a brand of tools that I tend to pay a ton of attention to. I recognize them as a pretty good brand, but not quite reaching the status of those at the top of my list, like Flex or Milwaukee. However, looking at this impact driver I have begun to rethink my opinions, and wonder if perhaps I should pay attention to Makita more. Moving the control panel from the front to back is a choice that I wish more companies would make sooner. I cannot count the amount of times something has felt off with my impact and I've found out it was because I had the wrong mode selected for what I was doing. This alone would make me curious in this model, but the additions of the quick shift and ring light both impress me greatly. The quick shift would add a fair amount of convenience if you are in a lot of different situations rapidly, but other than that doesn't seem that groundbreaking. The 360 degree light however, is something that I want on every impact driver ever. The light placement on my impact drivers is perhaps one of the most important things that I look at. I hate it when companies decide to put the light on the foot instead of the head. All-in-all, I am very impressed by this impact driver, and will be paying more attention to Makita products in the future.

When I saw the 9.5/10 rating on the Makita XDT20 18V LXT Quick-Shift Impact Driver, I was incredibly interested and impressed and could not wait to learn what makes this driver so highly rated. The sheer quantity of modes and specific situations this tool is designed for is super impressive, and I can definitely see the added design feature of being able to change through modes by using the quick-shift button and one-handed mode switcher being useful when in precarious situations. Another thing that stood out to me was the 360-degree LED light. I can’t recall ever seeing that on a driver before, and I have to say, I think that it is super cool. I often struggle with the one tiny led light on most drivers not being bright enough, or creating a shadow that makes is difficult to see, or just generally being annoying. So, seeing this 360 degree light has really opened up a whole new world, and I wish I saw that on more drivers.
