Guthrie Theater heads into union negotiations, disagrees with management about DEIA

MPR News: A newsletter from the Guthrie Theater Front-Facing Staff Union, dated Friday, Jan. 25, announced that IATSE Local 13 and the front-facing departments at the Guthrie met with Guthrie senior management. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss creating a union contract — and quickly ran into disagreements about DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility), as well as other labor questions.

Seeing all this news surrounding unions in this industry has been particularly interesting as we’re able to see in real time whether or not particular theaters are willing to truly stand for their values when it comes to these kinds of negotiations when they come into question. Further, it is interesting how they draw these lines of where there values stand in their implementation as the article discusses Guthrie Theater is willing to uphold a DEIA position, but only codify it in their handbook as opposed to also in a union contract. To these points, it is interesting where each of these come from and whether or not the same individuals are those who purport DEI values are also those who are hoping to limit statements like this in a union contract. Finally, maybe this is merely a result of the currently shifting times to actually protect those under the contract from scrutiny, yet nonetheless, values ought to be properly reflected in actions, otherwise they are just meaningless words.
