Lighting design, while not something I want to concentrate in, is a fascinating type of art that I feel I have not had a lot of exposure to. The typical light shows or displays I have seen in the past were mainly Christmas light displays, with not much variety as far as the lighting equipment. These sort of light displays with professional lighting equipment are an entirely different story. I especially liked the display portrayed in the last image of the light shining through the branches of the tree. It appeared to be symbolic of hope and resistance in the face of oppression to me. The tree looked like a giant hand trying to block the light, but some of the beams shone through anyways and reached the other side. Several of the pictures show incredible environments that appear more realistic because of the lighting choices, and I would definitely love to experiment with lighting gels and incorporate lights into my work in the future.

This project feels literally like my dream job. I’m really interested in both lighting design for sculptural art and for botanical gardens/conservatories, so this is right up my alley. (Especially given that one of the sculptures is literally a giant neuron!!! I got really distracted looking at Roxy Paine’s other art in the process of writing this news comment. It’s just so incredible.) Not only is this exhibition just beautiful as a whole, it’s also very unique in its implementation of music and interactivity into the design. Anyway I also got distracted looking at Lightswitch’s website. Their other work is similarly fantastic. I was particularly impressed by “Dimensions,” a lighting installation at Sensorio in Central California, where light shines through these massive sculptural forms with intricate geometric patterns on their sides, creating colorful patterns of light and shadow on the ground. All this to say I think working at Lightswitch is my new dream job.
