You Can’t Shop Palace Costume (Costumers and Stylists Only!) But You Can Browse This New Book

Vogue: “I first started going to Palace Costume about 20 years ago, through a stylist friend of mine, and it was obviously love at first sight,” says Mimi Haddon, the Los Angeles-based photographer, costume designer, educator, and author of Palace Costume: Inside Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret, out tomorrow.

Palace costume looks absolutely gorgeous. The pieces that are kept in the archive are pieces of history that are invaluable and incredibly insightful into what the trends and styles were of different times. The fabric samples in the photographs on the website are so vivid and still contain so much life- even though they were relevant in the 60s. Learning about the different shows and movies that the costume studio has worked on was super interesting, and I loved glancing at the photo samples. The shoe shots were some of my favorites- the photography of this article is just so stunning. The idea that one of the costumes could walk in with a memorable costume piece from a beloved movie or show on any given day is so funny to me. My personal favorite shot in the article is from La La Land, with a beloved dress from Palace. I had no idea one of my favorite movies sources from this studio!

Places like Palace Costume are SO important to the industry—especially now. There used to be a lot more costume rental shops like these in major filming hubs (LA, New York City, Toronto), but as time goes by more and more of them have begun closing. From this, several remaining rental shops (like Palace Costumes) gained massive recognition and became hotspots for many major productions at once. The article lists some of the designers and movies that rented from Palace Costumes (Carol, designed by Sandy Powell, The People vs. Larry Flint, designed by Arianne Phillips, La La Land, designed by Mary Zophres) and it’s absolutely mindblowing just how much impact it has on the industry. It’s also amazing to have a place with so many unique pieces—sometimes, you need to see a few options before you have a sense of what you want out of a costume, and a place as large and well-stocked as Palace Costumes is the perfect place to go searching.
