Profile: The Pittsburgh Promoter, Dawn Keezer
Pittsburgh Magazine: Dawn Keezer says she can sell just about any filmmaker on Pittsburgh. Whether you’re making a movie set in Paris, San Francisco or New York, the fast-talking executive director of the Pittsburgh Film Office has got you covered.
“We do New York better than New York does,” says Keezer. “Because here you can shut down one street and be in midtown Manhattan,” no massive traffic jam required.
She says it with such conviction that you get the sense she could win an argument against a hardcore Yankees fan.

Before reading this article I did not know that so many movies had been filmed in Pittsburgh. The only two movies I have seen that were filmed in Pittsburgh are Concussion (2015) and Jack Reacher (2012). I never thought of the possibility of filming a scene in ‘Manhattan’ in the middle of downtown Pittsburgh, or utilizing sports arenas and stadiums for large sets. But as I read the article, I realized just how much sense it makes. Pittsburgh has so much variety in architecture, geography, and historic sites, leading to the potential for minimal manipulation of the existing environment to achieve the desired effect. I personally would love to see more August Wilson works filmed in Pittsburgh, because all but one of his plays took place in Pittsburgh.
Finally, I found the section about Keezer’s struggle to get where she is now a necessary look into an industry that has not historically been kind to women. It is a reminder to myself that the path ahead isn’t easy, but I have the capacity to survive in my chosen profession.
