Broadway's Newly Refurbished Majestic Theatre Reopens With a Performance of Gypsy's Iconic Overture | Playbill

Playbill: Curtain up! Light the lights! The Majestic Theatre has now officially reopened. The theatre was previously home to the long-running Broadway show The Phantom of the Opera. When that show closed in 2023 after running 35 years on the Broadway, the Majestic also went dark as it underwent a belated makeover, including renovations to modernize the theatre in time for its first post-Phantom tenant: a Broadway revival of Gypsy starring Audra McDonald.

I was just thinking the other day about Broadway shows that have been running for over decades and how the facilities must be stuck in the time period the long running shows began. Tight hallways, old seats, small bathrooms, etc. It’s cool to read about the transformations of the Majestic Theatre to make it more modern. It is sad though that Phantom closed only because its a classic. I wonder when other shows with similar long standing times like Wicked will close and those theatres will get makeovers. I thought it was interesting how the chandelier that belonged to the Majestic Theatre had to be put in storage in lieu of the Phantom chandelier that apparently dropped every show. I think it would be hard to be the first show to open in a theatre that has housed a show as large as Phantom or Wicked because many theatre goers probably have an expectation that there are good things to come in place of it.
