Kelly Strayhorn's Joseph Hall on sequins, white leather boots, and getting “your drag on”

Pittsburgh City Paper: As a teenager, my style inspiration was Lenny Kravitz — that hair, bare midriff, those platforms! Like Prince, David Bowie, and other well-loved male artists, he pushed the boundaries of gendered style. Later in life, I learned of Sylvester, Marsha P. Johnson, Club Kids, Etta James, etc. … badasses who not only made bold choices with their looks but also with how they wore their intersectional identities. At one point, I had Etta’s signature blonde hair!

I adore the way that Joseph Hall talked about his clothes. The way he described the things he was wearing made the image in my head even more beautiful than the actual photos in the article which were beautiful already. hearing people talk about fashion like this proves that it is about so much more than just the clothes you wear. Hall turns it into an art form and the way that people use fashion definitely lends itself more to that definition. The way that he expresses himself through his clothes and the way he can turn that expression into a message is amazing. Using his platform to elevate BIPOC owned businesses and designers is such a fun way of helping to bring those voices into the spotlight and show others how to style their clothes impeccably. I also loved that he mentioned his love for vintage and second hand clothes, and it was a super fun discovery that he loves one of my favorite vintage stores Eons.
