Theatre for Development in Malawi

HowlRound Theatre Commons: Theatre is alive and well in Malawi, mostly in the form of theatre for development. Defined by Patrick Kabvina—a facilitator at the non-governmental organization the Story Workshop, which harnesses creative entertainment and social and behavioral change communication to improve the lives of Malawians—theatre for development uses theatrical performances to create a platform for debate on major issues that affect the community.

This is such a creative and great idea. Theatre is such a good way to bring people together. Theatre and performing arts should be available and accessible to anybody, regardless of socio-economic class or anything else. Theatre education, like music education, a lot of the time, is unfortunately only available to upper class areas in more developed countries. I believe it is important for students of all ages from anywhere should be exposed to music and theatre alike. Storytelling/oral traditions has always been a prominent part of cultures around the world. The idea of using theatre to educate communities about voting and registration is pretty genius. It exposes people to an art form but also an important right everybody should be able to participate in. I wonder if they could use theatre for other educational topics, such as sexual health and women’s health. It is also really cool the government is supporting this initiative.

Theatre is such a powerful tool in society. I think this gets lost a lot of time especially in our society where we don’t see it make money or lead to great success. That being said I think its important that we aren’t just simply trying to save theatre in our country and our society but also doing things like this and making sure that it is used and important in other societies. Using theatre for educational purposes is also a supper important and powerful idea. I know through the education that I am getting and have received that teaching through theatre as a tool can be a very powerful way of joining and bring people together. Regardless of the outside factors when a group of people come together and work towards a common goal. It breaks down so many walls and joins so many different kinds of people together.
