All We Need is Audience Development?

The Theatre Times: The audience question is haunting the world of arts. A question without an answer, a troublesome relation, a world unexplored. How do they feel? Why do they come? What do they think? Flocks of critics, philosophers, researchers, and producers have looked for an answer for millennia, producing numerous insights and theories that were only to be displaced by new ones. But the desire to capture the essence of audience behavior is as strong as ever. Welcome to audience development—the newest attempt at capturing and influencing audience behavior.

What an interesting article. It has been great seeing all of these newspage articles that focus on the audience as the theatre is created to be consumed and theatre practitioners should focus on the audience sometimes a little more than they do. One thing I learned from this article is about the department and job of being in audience development. I had no idea this was a separate area that companies have. It is really great to hear that audience development isn’t focused on selling the show as much as it seems to be about making the experience as amazing as possible. It was great reading that it's not about getting good reviews but it is building a habit and improving satisfaction. I also love that this article points out that each audience member sees the show differently. I love that the article acknowledges it can force the audience to all find a similar takeaway. Overall, this article looked at an audience and their role in a new way from what I have seen in other articles.
