Theatre and Politics in Malawi
HowlRound Theatre Commons: Historically in Malawi, there has been a conscious effort from government to control and subdue any form of theatre that challenges the status quo of oppressive political establishments. This article brings the sad and unfortunate truth about a country which claims to ensure equal rights and opportunities to its citizens.
We live in a day and age where democracy is almost synonymous with how a country should function. People have almost started to take it as for granted: it is thought to be absolutely normal for everyone to have equal rights. This article can be credited as destroying that perception.
What the country of Malawi is doing by repressing the artistic voices of its citizens is unjustified and unfair towards everyone because everyone have the right to express what they feel and to show their disagreement about things that they do not want or understand. Repression of these voices for political purposes just tells us how regressive and unfair the political system of the country is and how it is very important for the country to fight for what it thinks to be right.
