Pittsburgh CLO rolls out New Musicals Weekend '19

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Pittsburgh CLO is looking for that Spark again. Its second New Musicals Weekend, a project of the Next Generation Campaign’s New Small Musicals Initiative and a mini-me of the SPARK festival, bursts into the Pittsburgh Cultural District Saturday and Sunday.

I think what CLO is doing with this New Musical Weekend is great because I think it is so important for theatres to do new works. If every theatre would only do shows that have already been produced than there would be no need for playwrights to be writing new ones. New plays need to be written because theatre often reflects the world or teaches the audiences something about the world or shows the audience something they thought they knew in a new light. But the world is always changing which is why it is so important for new shows to be written and produced. I do know that some people find it much more enjoyable to see a show they know something about, which is another reason I think these readings of new musicals are so great. Since the readings are free they probably encourage people to go and then when these shows get fully produced people might be more willing to see it because they had seen the reading or they know someone who did or they read an article about it.
