Variety: Last week, Angelina Jolie stole headlines with the news that she is the latest A-lister to join the Marvel fold, taking a key role in the franchise hopeful “The Eternals.”
Buried deep in the stories was the previously announced news that Chloé Zhao, a Chinese filmmaker with the acclaimed indie “The Rider” and one other feature under her belt, will direct the buzzy tentpole.

The problem is not that there aren't females being allowed to direct - anyone can make a movie, and just some time spent online will show you thousands upon thousands of wonderful films directed and conceptualized by female directors. The problem is that, just like many things in the industry, they often have to fight harder to get their films into the mainstream. The main problem is that studios are not giving women the opportunity to direct bigger films. Looking at just the percentage of female directed feature films, especially in the US 8% is such a disappointing number (about 20 female directed films). I'm glad that there is a number, but it could be so much bigger. I think it's time studios loosen up, a film may be a hit or miss regardless of who is directing, and females have proven that they can bring immense cash flow into studios with hits, for example Mary Harron who directed American Psycho, Nora Twomey with The Breadwinner, Penny Marshall with Big, and the list could go on and on. I am excited for all the films coming up, because these will hopefully help show studios that women directors deserve to be a more present force in their studios and in Hollywood.
