Your Broadway Fall Preview! 2017 Edition
Theatre Development Fund – TDF: Although the 2017-2018 Broadway season officially began when 1984 debuted back in June, it kicks into high gear this fall with 12 new productions bowing on the boards. (We've also included three that opened over the summer.) As usual, autumn brings more plays than musicals, and you'll have to wait until spring for the much-buzzed-about stage incarnations of Frozen, Mean Girls, and Harry Potter to hit NYC.

Personally, the show I am most excited for is the Spongebob Squarepants musical! When I first heard about it, I thought it sounded at best like a cash grab, and at worst just plain dumb. But after looking at it, mainly at its scenic and costume designs, I started to slowly fall in love with the subtle genius it. The character of the television show, joyful and silly and colorful, was brought perfectly to life on a stage covered with trash objects like the bottom of a littered ocean - hula hoops and silly straws mix in with metal tubes and neon lights. And the costumes - oh goodness, the costumes! Each one perfectly envisions the character without putting the actors in foam suits or big plastic heads. Each choice recreates not only the colors and personalities, but even the shapes of the animated characters - Sandy's round afro mimics the shape of her original helmet, and the background characters have fantastically bright and structured costumes that make them look almost fake but yet fit in perfectly to the rest of the show. I'm very excited for this piece, and I'm probably (read: definitely) going to be checking this show out when I get home to New York!!!
