I have to say that childcare on film sets is something I've never thought of before...ever. On my list of articles to comment on, I have ‘One in four performing arts careers halted by parenthood’. Wouldn't this help dissipate the problem? I definitely empathize that not being able to take care of your child during filming would be a big turn-off to working mothers. The line between raising a family and having a successful career is a big debate right now, with seemingly a sole female-based crowd (even though most kids have 2 parents? What about that father - but that's another comment for late). On a budgetary side, this would be a huge cost, but not one that a big film house couldn't afford. If it starts with the big budget Hollywood movies, it will eventually trickled downstream, and we could actually see more women on film now that what's seen as their biggest job (motherhood) can coexist with their secondary job (working). It's also a space issue. I assume that they're not going to be set. Will everyone's kids for the whole studio be in one room? Will Reese Witherspoons kids hang out with Angelina Jolie's kids?
I am surprised that this idea hasn’t come up before. Would childcare work in the film industry though? In the article it states that at one point she can be called at 5:45am and not return home until 8pm, how would childcare help with that big chunk of day? It would just mean your kids would be in a random room with random adults and other kids at 5:45 in the morning. I don’t know much about the film world but I would think that actor/actresses would be too busy to stop by the childcare area to see their kids because of their schedule. I am not saying I’m against this idea at all because it sounds great but I am just thinking logically and reasonably would it be worth it in the end. I do think that something should change because women are having to stay home with their children or have a nanny with them which means they barely seem them, that doesn’t seem fair in either scenario. So what is the logical solution?
