Youth Investment

ChurchProduction.com: Nearly 70% of the people volunteering in the church’s technical production ministries are in their early teens to college-age years—and The Naz draws upon this youthful passion and energy. “My youngest team member is 14 and the age ranges all the way up to early 60s,” says Grove City Nazarene Technical Director Matt Groves. “Mentoring and teaching is very important to me as well as to the church in general.

As a practicing Christian it has always been so interesting the number of my friends and other just random people who wanted to get involved with the production side of the ministry. What was so interesting was many of these involved kids wanted weren’t devoted to the ministry because their parents wanted them to be, they were doing it because they genuinely had an interest in the video and sound production of church choir or the house management of the finance section. I would have loved it if we had the same opportunities as these program offers, the ability to combine a love a Christ and a love of Tech Theater into to a career I don’t think is something they ever considered possible. This could be more than just a casual opportunity for these kids to volunteer and gain some experience. I seriously think that the company should consider expanding this into a funded project.

Even though this article was more about the equipment they had rather than their student volunteers I still want to expand on how impactful it is to have student volunteers for church’s. I grew up in the church and I worked as a volunteer whenever I could. It wasn’t as large as this church talked about in the article but I can attest to the fact that getting students involved at a young age gives them purpose and something to live for. Church is very different compared to theatre but it still is some sort of entertainment. I know that I found my passion in the arts but volunteering to do the human videos. I had something outside of my school I was doing and it made me a more rounded person. So even though having student workers is hard and can be taxing it can be worth it in the future when they come back to you and say this is where I started, this is where I found my calling.

These are the kind of theater places that make the biggest impact, even over Broadway and Disney. The places that bring anyone no matter age or skill set but are just hungry to learn and create. I myself worked my first show when I was 12 years old. The director who I have since worked 30 shows with make such an incredible impact in my life, and I cannot imagine the experience that this Church must give so many other students. The author discusses to great lengths the equipment that the Church has which the students use, and as good as an experience that is to use newer technology, what should get more of a spot light is the director and coordinators who mentor the students. I have never seen a Church with such a good theater program. Many congregations have a program for performing, but I have never heard of one with such a good administration and state of the art equipment. This is must be such a good thing for the community and all the individuals!
