Reading this flyer made me salivate. Between the ads for awesome products and the seminars offered, (Creating a Safety Culture in Entertainment, anyone? How about Digital Signal Processing Theory? Or, for everyone who's ever wondered, How Did They Come Up With That Working Load Limit?) LDI is a theater techs fantasy, and I haven't even stated on the backstage tours (Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio, in case you were interested.) This being the 21st century, all of this content can be accessed on one's smartphone, for scheduling without a paper schedule.
If this all weren't already cool enough, some of our talented grads are off in Vegas to compete at LDI, and hopefully bring glory and honor to the hallowed halls of the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama (although, let's be realistic, we'd have to clear a space for the glory and the honor , as all of our other glory and honor is taking up quite a bit of room, and those hallways are tight enough as is).
These conferences are crucial I think to furthering our understanding of entertainment profession. Like the worlds fairs used to do, events such as USITT, SATE, IIAPa, and Live Design International bring many companies and people to one place to share their ideas and improve the way we see and create entertainment. I loved seeing the ads online about the various products that are on the market. there were so many innovations to entertainment that it blows your mind thinking abut what could come out next. what springs to m mind first is how to implement these into our spaces as soon as possible. when can we start teaching these tools at schools. If they start at the university level they will have a firmer grasp in the field ten years down the road. The future of Live show design rests on two things. Like it has always been, The telling of a great story that entertains a large audience. And a continuing innovating field that goes up with new technologies to tell these stories better. If events like this continue then I think we will be able to continue our progress in entertainment.
