Backstage: Grants are up for grabs. The Broadway League has announced the 10 recipients for their 20th annual National Education and Engagement Grants, which help support programs geared toward experiencing and understanding Broadway as “a form of artistic expression and a powerful educational tool,” according to a statement from the League.

Theatre education is something that is very important to me (obviously), and one of the biggest issues I have is that at a certain point theatre becomes inaccessible. When it comes to theatre education, there are certain options which are available and relatively affordable (high school and community theatre, classes and summer camps at the local rec center), but as soon as the desire to discover and learn about theatre moves beyond what the local community an offer, things snowball. Regional theatre can be very expensive, and Broadway theatre even more so. Not to mention that these bigger venues are less likely to allow those still in training to become a part of the theatre making process. I’m glad that the Broadway League is taking steps to allow more accessible theatre, and I hope that process continues. I think grant programs are a good start, and I can only hope that this helps these theatres to continue in educating their audiences.
