When I was in high school, some students from our theatre class would learn monologues and enter this contest. The class had entered the contest for many years in a row, but never won any of the awards. Surprisingly, while looking through this year’s list of winners, I spotted my school’s name. This competition is a great idea to introduce and immerse students into the world of Shakespeare, one that is often avoided in high school. The other great thing about this program that I’ve heard from past students is that each student does receive feedback, so they aren’t doing this without hearing how they did. Also, I’m glad that not only so many students participated in the competition, but also that so many school districts did. Typically the arts in high schools in western Pennsylvania are limited to the schools that can afford it, but I’m happy to see such a large number of areas were a part of a great arts competition.
