PBT stages elaborate new production of 'Beauty and the Beast'

TribLIVE: Valentine's Day is a special time of year in dance, because romance is one of ballet's strong suits.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre has invested heavily in a special offering this season, one that many of its leaders remember from performing early in their careers: Lew Christensen's “Beauty and the Beast,” which he created in 1958 for the San Francisco Ballet.

I really wish I could see this production. I absolutely love dance performances and Beauty and the Beast is my favorite musical (in the children’s section, of course) and seeing the two adapted into one another would be an amazing experience. I find ballet very striking in its movements, much more so than I find acting to be. I believe that acting relies on subtleties in characters to create the world but ballet has all to do with motion and movement, making everything not over-the-top, but instead more defining and powerful. I always think back to the time I saw the Boston Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker and how surprised I was at my ability to comprehend the story just from music and motion. Other than the actual dancing, the costumes and effort going into making this production look fabulous and I can not believe how many intricacies are going into each costume piece.
