5 Tried-and-True Acting Colleges

Backstage: Currently celebrating its centennial, Carnegie Mellon is the oldest degree-granting conservatory in the country. Headed by Australian-born Peter Cooke, the drama program offers both BFA and MFA degrees to those accepted into the Pittsburgh-based program. “I would love the students to think beyond Broadway and Los Angeles, and understand that there is a big, brave world out there,”

What makes these schools so successful is that that they have been around forever! They know what is good, and what is bad. They have produced successful alumni and have formed amazing connections. Their networks are huge that is what makes their recent graduates so successful. These schools are slo not a fraud to give their students the good push to where they need to be.

It’s so great that Carnegie Mellon consistently makes these top lists. It makes me so thrilled to go here (and helps to justify the tuition costs). I really like what Peter Cooke says about studying outside of drama, and how he stresses that we aren’t about Broadway and L.A., but rather the whole world around them. It was also interesting to read about other school’s policies. Rutgers sending their students to study at the Globe is a really interesting idea, and it’s cool that once the students return they put on the play that they studied. I also think that the way NYU tries to crate fearless actors, and the three-story set makes their production of Hair sound like it was a really great experience for the actors and the performers.

I completely agree with Jason on this. While its not a hard rule, one of the factors that really helps these schools be on this list is that they have all been around for quite a long time and because of that have the experience and knowledge that some schools do not. Like Thomas says, it feels really great to consistently hear about the school you attend in such a great light. I feel truly fortunate and can only hope to add to the excellence that is Carnegie Mellon's School of Drama.
