Beastie Boys Settle With GoldieBlox

Pollstar: In a statement to Rolling Stone, a spokesperson for GoldieBlox, which makes a line of engineering toys for girls, noted the company will make a payment “based on a percentage of its revenues, to one or more charities selected by Beastie Boys that support science, technology, engineering and mathematics education for girls.”

Modern America seems to be the land of the lawsuit crazed people who are willing to sue, mercilessly and indiscriminately, anyone for even the most trivial of reasons. It is actually refreshing to read an article about a lawsuit where the two sides are empathetic towards one another, and willing to make own up to mistakes. I also respect the integrity of the Beastie Boys as artists due to their refusal to ever use their songs to sell products, which is how the lawsuit got started, but even in settling with Goldiebox, they do so in a respectful and non-vindictive tone that many could take a lesson from. They simply want what is theirs to remain theirs, even if the company in question was using their songs in a creative way and with ideals that the Beastie Boys are in full support of.

I'm pretty surprised by how much the Beastie Boys care about and respect not only where their music ends up but also the goals of the company. To have the money sent to different charities rather than just keeping the money to themselves is astonishing. On top of that, I've never known an artist to say to themselves that they would never let their songs be used for an advertisement. I'm curious as to whether its a matter of pride for the beastie boys or if it's a message about them being rebellious and fighting corporate america or something.
