28 injured in California fireworks accident
Salon.com: More than two dozen people were injured when a wood platform holding live fireworks tipped over, sending the pyrotechnics into a crowd at a Fourth of July show northwest of Los Angeles, authorities said Friday.
Between 8,000 and 10,000 revelers were settling into their seats for the fireworks extravaganza at a Simi Valley park Thursday night when the spectacle of lights that were supposed to be launched in the sky never took off. Instead, a bright plume of red and white bursts spread across the ground, injuring 28 people and sending others fleeing for safety.

Its events like these that are truly tragic and always make one feel sad inside. To those poor 28 injured people I'm sorry, however the fact that the fireworks were held on a wooden platform is a dumb idea in the first place, for it requires fire to light fireworks, and that could prove to be a serious hazard as well. Also the fireworks are unstable in the first place, which is why people are required to be a set distance back from the display, and maybe the barriers weren't far enough back. All this aside however, this is a tragic event and hopefully in the future things like these can be prevented.
I'm very interested in why fireworks are so popular in the USA. They're very dangerous and can go wrong quickly. When that kind of tragedy happens, it really makes me question the necessity of flaming explosions in the air above citizens. Despite that they are basically the symbol of the Fourth of July and are used for many extravagant celebrations. There are some seriously insane firework displays out there. Disney's nightly ones are all out and so extreme. I can't imagine the amount of money that goes into each show every night.
Fireworks are dangerous. It's surprising how few people realize that our nation's favorite Fourth of July activity can be deadly. If proper precautions aren't taken, they can actually kill. I've had a firework almost launched at my face and my mother has a cousin with half a hand due to a fireworks accident. So, when fireworks are placed onto a wooden platform that has been poorly constructed, it's really no surprise that people are injured.
