Review: ‘The Addams Family’ blends off-beat humor, family affection

TribLIVE: If “The Addams Family” were a candy bar, its primary ingredient would, of course, be rich, dark chocolate. But it also would have a sweet caramel center flecked with nuggets of tart, dried fruit and a sprinkling of exotic nuts. It’s a confection that easily could become a guilty pleasure for musical-theater fans.

From what I heard, the show was less than fabulous. It wasn't good at all from what I heard. The set was atrocious and acting was less than superior. All in all the reviews that I heard were not very good. I expected more from a travelling Broadway show. Not all things are as good on some stages as they are on others. They producers really should have though about its travelling ability before taking off with it.

I saw the Addams Family on Broadway three days before it opened, with Nathan Lane as Gomez. I thought it was a fantastic show. I know that the reviews of it are generally negative, but I thought it was genuinely entertaining and was just a fun show to watch. I will admit, the songs are not the most inspired, and the plot is very similar to that of La Cage Au Folles, but nonetheless it was a fun show. I haven’t seen the new version, but I think the show will definitely be less good on tour, because two of the reasons that I liked it so much the first time were because of the inventive moving set that they had, which is not the one they tour with, and the original cast, who all did a fantastic job bringing their characters to life. I would enjoy seeing it again though, to compare the differences between this production and the original one I saw on Broadway several years ago.
