A Stunt Category for the Oscars

ThinkProgress: There have been on-and-off efforts over the year to get a stunts category into the Academy Awards, and apparently those conversations are starting up again. As someone who would like to see more movies like Casino Royale or District 9 to be in Oscar contention, and for action movies to have more incentives to think of themselves as Oscar-worthy and to raise their game correspondingly, I think I’m in favor of such an addition, pending what the final categories look like, of course.

I think this calls to question a good point: more than just the movie's stars and directors should gain some recognition, especially during Oscar season. I think the stunt doubles for so many movies and films deserve so much more respect for what they do, they do everything the actors are to afraid/ not enough to do, risking there lives in dangerous stunts all the while. When I went to go see Spiderman on Broadway, I literally gave a standing ovation to the approximately 10 stunt doubles all for the one Spiderman character during the bows, they lined up in a row and took their masks off together. That happening made me realize what an important role an ensemble plays in a cast- and how under appreciated they usually happen to be. My only curiosity is who the award would go to- the stunt double themselves or the choreographer or both!

I think this is an excellent idea, although it brings to mind the question, "will the top 3 stunt doubles in the industry repeatedly win the oscar?" I don't know how stunts are hired, or how much time they're required on set, or what their contracts look like. Would adding an oscar category be an incentive for movies to add more stunt scenes, or spend more on their stunt budget? Probably some directors would care, and others wouldn't. In general, I would love to see more behind=the=scenes type of crafts be recognized at the Oscars.

over the past few years there have been many arguments and discussions about whether or not the use of the physical stunt man will one day become completely obsolete. I am a personal advocate for real action and real life stunts when it comes to film because technology is years away from giving the audience that same true thrill that a stunt man can provide. for the oscar's to provide a stunt category would be a great incentive for film makers to continue with the tradition (safely of course). It would be curious thought to see how the category would be judged and critiqued. Keeping in mind unfortunate incidents like expendables 2.

YESSSSS. I am in great favor of adding this award. I also have to ask, who would be opposed to this? I don't know what the downside would be to the addition of a new category. Bringing attention to all of the crazy hard work and training that goes into action sequences is something that is seriously lacking. After all, the appeal of action movies, to many audience members, is based on the amount of crazy stunts they will see and how much adrenaline will be pumping. My only concern is that movies might become so focused on the stunts aspect that the story will fall behind.

so this is an old argument the article says so. instead of trying to rehash old arguments i was wondering what has changed? there was spiderman where obviously stunts where a big part of that production and it was unfortunate that people got hurt but i don't think that that is a reason. i do think you could make an argument that actual effects with people instead of using a computers. i just think that is interesting that green screen has gone from top of the line effect to b-rated movie. stunts in my opinion have become a mark of a nicer show now.

This is a great idea that really doesn't matter. Surprised it took them so long to come up with this. The golden age of the Hollywood stuntman was 70 years ago. I'm fine with these individuals getting a category, I'm surprised it didn't already exist. The reason it doesn't matter is because it doesn't' matter. People care about best actress, screenplay, etc. No one cares about sound mixing or special effects. Can you tell me who won the Oscar for best makeup last year?...It was the Iron Lady.

This should be a category at the Oscars. There really is no reason why it shouldn't be. The lack of recognition of the individuals who do the stunts, especially the stunt men or women, is a little off putting. It would be nice to see the individuals who do the stunts, whether it be the dedicated actors of stand ins, get some recognition for the amount of effort, time, and skill they have to do those death defying feats we always see. It would asexually be great to see this category in most of the awards we watch, not even the Oscars. Being famous is one thing, but we should recognize the people who have the skills and dedication to do the other stuff too.

I am 65% in favor of adding a stunt category being added to the oscars. Stunts are are an art. When you do them right they look so cool and make the movie better because of it. However, the other 35% of me thinks the opposite. When you add a stunt to a film you are by default adding something amazing if the stunt is done right. It is for this reason of warding someone for "doing their job right" that makes me not be in favor of the award. There are many other important aspects that can raise the quality of a film, but do those also need their own awards. In the end, I feel that it would be nice for stunts to have their own award, but really they just better the film, so they do not need their own award.
