Ringing Up the Curtain

WSJ.com: 'Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Westside Theatre," began the taped greeting heard just before a performance of the off-Broadway show "Rated P for Parenthood," a musical revue about the highs and lows of reproducing. Boilerplate about the location of the fire exits followed, along with a request to "please turn off your cellphones." At least that's what the determinedly calm female voice seemed to be saying.

This article wasn't anything new. People have been asked for years to turn off their cell phones and not text. I think now, people are trying to find new ways to say the same things. Trying to say it with humor so no one is offended is good, but it shouldn't have to be an issue in the first place. I think if anything, people are worse than they use to be as texting and having a cell phone is so common. It is more important in live theatre to be compliant as this can effect the performance of the actors. It still isn't good in a movie theatre but the performance isn't in jeopardy. I feel that if you truly can't leave your phone alone for 2 hours to see a movie, musical or other live performance, you probably need to stay home.
