Pocket-sized Robot

CMU:

Piccolo the tiny CNC-bot from diatom studio on Vimeo.

If you like to tinker, a new product being developed by a team from Carnegie Mellon University may interest you. Piccolo is a computer numerical control (CNC) robot that you can use to draw your own business cards, create illustrations or just have fun experimenting with CNC output. Once heavy, bulky and only affordable to big manufacturing companies, this new CNC bot will sell for under $100 — and you can carry it in your pocket.

I think things like this are incredible. Though technology is something I use everyday, actually creating something like this is unfathomable to me. I'm probably more attracted to this type of robot because it combines technology with art. (Also, how can you not become obsessed with a robot that can draw mustaches on electrical outlets? It's adorable!n)
I hope that in my remaining time at CMU I can take a some kind of robotics class.

When I watch movies like this it makes me wish that there was more collaboration between the different departments at Carnegie Mellon. There are others wonderful departments outside of Drama that is doing some amazing work and I wish that we at one point were able to work with them to create something together. I would be very interested to know more about how this device works. I would love to play with one of these kits. I personally have no knowledge of robotics of any sort that I would love to see how well I could use this.
