Latinos Take Center Stage at the NALIP Conference
backstage.com: The time has come to shine a brighter spotlight on Latinos in the arts, and the National Association of Latino Independent Producer's 13th annual conference, set for Friday through Sunday in Los Angeles, aims to make that happen by building bridges for Latinos in the media.

I didn't know that this existed, but I'm glad that it does. While the article wasn't super-clear on who the intended attendees of this conference were, I like the idea of their theme this year: "Diverse Voice, Universal Content." Because Latino/as are still very much an underrepresented group in entertainment, it becomes hard to spread an individual message without seeming to be speaking on behalf of the entire group experience. A piece like "In The Heights," for instance, comments primarily on the daily life of Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Mexicans living in northern manhattan. While other nationalities such as colombians or argentineans can still relate to the show, one cannot say that it directly parallels the experience of all latinos. it would be like saying that the black experience is the same for those in the caribbean and those in africa. While this doesn't seem to be a huge problem yet, hopefully the further emergence of different and diverse latino/a voices in entertainment will show how multi-layered a society latin america is, and how many rich cultures it has to learn from.
