High-spirited 'Coppelia' perfect conclusion to PBT season

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: The romantic comedy "Coppelia" provided one kind of perfect conclusion to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's 2011-12 season on Friday night at the Benedum Center. It was a high spirited celebration of dance, showcasing the skill and personality of the dancers and supported by a beautiful live performance of the famous score.

This Sunday afternoon, my daughter and I went to Coppelia. I had seen it in 2000, but it was much different through the eyes of a five year old. Whereas she enjoyed Peter Pan and the Nutcracker immensely the plot of Coppelia was a little difficult for her to understand. There were many questions of “is that a doll?” wait, “is that the doll?” “Is the doll real?” “When is the doll coming back?” Fortunately Santina was with us and was able to answer most of these questions. A part from the doll confusion, the dancing was lovely. Lindy’s favorite part was the smoke effect of the toymakers laboratory exploding. My favorite part was the grand paux de deux at the end of act three. We are excited about next year’s seasons presentations of Cinderella and Giselle.Pittsburgh ballet does a great job making their performances accessible to young audiences. There were lots of little girls in fancy dresses and Lindy felt right at home.
