Seattle's famed Intiman Theatre faces final fundraising deadline

KPLU News for Seattle and the Northwest: How is an award-winning but bankrupt theater any different than say…Enron? Or a wayward lover? Or a drug addict? Those are the kind of questions that have been on the minds of some long-time subscribers to Seattle’s Intiman Theatre. Its board of directors is deciding whether to stay open or call it quits.

It is difficult for me to imagine Seattle’s theatre scene without the Intiman theatre as a part of it. They can always be counted on to produce very high quality and worthwhile shows. Despite my love of the company, I agree with this article’s ironic comparison of the Intiman to a drug addict, or Enron. They have been doing poorly as a company for a while and have seemingly gained very little ground against bankruptcy despite endless fundraisers. While the specific problems of this theatre have more to do with budgeting problems than anything else, they still bring up the difficult question of whether theatre should be able to fund itself. Theatre certainly can be a big moneymaking industry, Broadway can attest to that. But oftentimes the most experimental and worthwhile theatre simply cannot gain the audience number to make the money they need to stay afloat. We as a society need to decide whether the arts are something that is worth sinking money into, even if never receive a monetary return on our investment.

I am happy to see that since this article was published the Intiman has raised the one million that they need to open a new season.
