Italian classics fill Pittsburgh Opera's upcoming season
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: New productions, a blend of debuting and returning singers, and five great operas sung in Italian will fill Pittsburgh Opera's 2012-13 season. Two are comedies, two are tragedies; the fifth, "Don Giovanni," is a singular mixture of comedy and tragedy. The opera will create two new productions next season: "Don Giovanni" and "The Secret Marriage," and introduce a rented one of "Madama Butterfly" right after its premiere in Boston.

Opera and popes share one characteristic: they should both be Italian. Here's a true fact. My parents had this cat named Willow who really liked to listen to opera (because she was classy like that). Every time she saw my father getting out a record, she would situate herself in the living room, ready to hear the operatic stylings of the day.
One day, my father played Wagner, and what did that cat do? SHE LEFT THE ROOM. Now, I'm sure we all enjoy a little Der Ring des Nibelungen every once in a while, but what does this story teach us? Italian opera is always a safe bet.
Now that I've gotten all that off my chest, I'd like to say that I'm quite excited for Don Giovanni. It's one of my favorite operas, given the fact that I judge an opera's quality based on how many people get dragged down to Hell by the end.
